Synopsis: The GTE program supports fundamental research on geotechnical engineering aspects of civil infrastructure, such as site characterization, foundations, earth retaining systems, underground construction, excavations, tunneling, and drilling. Title: NanoManufacturing
Solicitation: NSF 10-1788
Synopsis: The Nanomanufacturing program supports fundamental research and education on design and manufacturing at the nanoscale. Emphasis of the program is on advancing manufacturing technology using production systems based on thermal, electrical, chemical and mechanical processes as well as biological actors (viruses, cells and bacteria) to fabricate nanostructures and to integrate these into micro-devices and meso- and macroscale systems. Examples include carbon, polymeric and bio-molecular architectures that exploit nanoscale features for nanomotors, nanorobots, and other nanomachinery. Title: Cooperative Studies of the Earth’s Deep Interior (CSEDI)

Synopsis: The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) invites the submission of proposals for collaborative, interdisciplinary studies of the Earth’s interior within the framework of the community-based initiative known as Cooperative Studies of the Earth’s Deep Interior (CSEDI). Funding will support basic research on the character and dynamics of the Earth’s mantle and core, their influence on the evolution of the Earth as a whole, and on processes operating within the deep interior that affect or are expressed on the Earth’s surface.
Projects may employ any combination of field, laboratory, and computational studies with observational, theoretical, or experimental approaches. Support is available for research and research infrastructure through grants and cooperative agreements awarded in response to investigator-initiated proposals from U.S. universities and other eligible institutions. Multidisciplinary work is required. EAR will consider co-funding of projects with other agencies and supports international work and collaborations.

Title: Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP)
Solicitation: DoD Core and seed solicitation
Synopsis: The Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) addresses high-priority environmental needs of the Department of Defense (DoD) and the Department of Energy (DOE). SERDP invests across the broad spectrum of basic and applied research, as well as advanced development. Through a competitive process, SERDP funds both Federal and private sector organizations to perform environmental research and development. A Call for Proposals (CFP) is issued to the Federal sector. A Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) is available to the non-Federal sector (industry and academia) via the Federal Business Opportunities. Proposals from the private sector do not require a DoD partner. There are two solicitations annually—a “Core” solicitation and a SERDP Exploratory Development (SEED) solicitation. Both solicitations are released in late October or early November and request proposals that address focused research and development topics called Statements of Need (SON).
